This was one of four detailed studies as part of the Nasiriyah City Master Plan, providing demonstration neighbourhood plans. Nasiriyah has an historic centre from the 1870s built on a grid pattern with high density residential and commercial plots. This historic core has a strong identity due to its proximity to the waterfront, its history as well its commercial centre.
We proposed the historic core should be maintained and enhanced as a distinctive focus for Nasiriyah’s residents, businesses and tourists. New development should respect the scale of the existing urban fabric with mixed use commercial/residential buildings to restore a vibrant residential element.
We prepared a set of development principles dealing with the four key areas of urban layout, building heights, land use and security. Detailed design guidelines dealing with architectural style and character were prepared with worked examples covering buildings and features in the public realm.
